What's Really Country?

by Bennett Neuhauser

It's a debate that has raged -- or at least simmered -- among Country music fans for years. Is the music coming out of Nashville today really Country? Or is Country only found in the style of songs played by classic and neo-traditional artists? Here's Ben Sage's solo-acoustic take on the essence of Country -- both the music and the place we live.

Dirt under your fingernails from working with the land
Skinned knuckles and elbow grease from fixing things by hand
A one-man woman being true to a strong one-woman man
That’s what’s really country to me

Two old friends swappin’ dreams across a glass of beer
An ex-high school football hero turnin’ grey around the ears
And when he walks into the bar his friends still give a cheer
That’s what’s really country to me

What’s really country? It’s hard to say
I hear a different definition every other day
But I’m sure it’s something precious you shouldn’t give away
That’s what’s really country to me.

Staring out the screen door of your own back porch
Watchin’ clouds come rollin’ and tumblin’ with the storm
Getting’ shook by thunder, watchin’ lightning strike a tree
That’s what’s really country to me

A mother tuckin’ in her son on a cold dark winter night
A man teaching his daughter how to fly a kite
And kids who just can’t fall asleep on a snowy Christmas Eve
That’s what’s really country to me

A tall white old church steeple and ringin’ wedding bells
An invitation from the president to march right into hell
Freedom-lovin’ people who know freedom isn’t free
That’s what’s really country to me
