Please Stay with Me Through the Dark

by Bennett Neuhauser

/

about

I wrote this song in 2017, with a lyrical nod to Emma Lazarus' poem on the Statue of Liberty, imagining what a refugee might say to someone in the US whose first impulse was to turn them away. Five years later, with the crisis in Ukraine, it seems to have renewed relevance.

[Guitar chords used: C, F, Am, G]

You have reasons to abandon everything you once held dear, but
Are you so blinded by your anger you can’t see me standing here?
I am lost and I am lonely, far from where I once called home
The only things that look familiar are the statue and its poem

You held your lamp beside the door
And your lamp still holds that spark
Don’t forget just what you stand for
Please stay with me through the dark

I can tell that you are troubled, I can see you’ve been let down
Yet whose shoulder can I lean on when my last chance has flown?
I understand you’ve got your own needs in a world full of fears
I pray you’ll somehow find the power to still see me through your tears

You held your lamp beside the door
And your lamp still holds that spark
Don’t forget just what you stand for
Please stay with me through the dark

Your doors are closed and I am frightened that you’ll mistake me for your foe
On distant shores I am waiting, see my face in the torch’s glow
Lift me up on wings of angels, like the singing meadowlark
I’m calling to you through the carnage, please stay with me through the dark

You held your lamp beside the door
And your lamp still holds that spark
Don’t forget just what you stand for
Please stay with me through the dark

No, don’t forget just what you stand for
Please stay with me through the dark
